New Delhi (VNI) 21July The FIFA World Cup 2026 not only made history by expanding to 48 teams and 104 matches, but also by offering the largest prize money in the tournament's history. Organised across the United States, Canada and Mexico, the tournament featured a record overall financial distribution of US$871 million (approximately ₹7,500 crore), making it the richest FIFA World Cup ever.
Out of the total amount, US$655 million was distributed as performance-based prize money, US$120 million was paid as qualification bonuses, while US$96 million was allocated as preparation grants. This meant that every nation qualifying for the FIFA World Cup received financial assistance even before playing its first match.
Spain, which defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final to win its second FIFA World Cup title, received US$50 million (around ₹430 crore) as champions. It is the highest winner's prize ever awarded in FIFA World Cup history.
Runners-up Argentina earned US$33 million (around ₹285 crore), while England, which finished third after defeating France in the third-place play-off, received US$29 million. Fourth-placed France collected US$27 million.
The teams reaching the quarter-finals earned US$19 million each, while those eliminated in the Round of 16 received US$15 million each. Teams knocked out in the Round of 32 collected US$11 million each, and the nations finishing between 33rd and 48th place were awarded US$9 million each.
Apart from the prize money based on tournament performance, FIFA also provided US$10 million to every qualified nation as a participation payment and an additional US$2.5 million as a preparation grant. This financial support was designed to help national football associations cover travel, training camps, accommodation, logistics and other tournament-related expenses.
The 2026 prize fund was significantly higher than the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the total prize money stood at US$440 million and the champions received US$42 million. With an increase to US$871 million, FIFA more than doubled the overall financial rewards, reflecting the expansion from 32 teams to 48 teams.
The record prize money is expected to strengthen football development across the world, especially in emerging football nations participating in the tournament. National associations can use these funds to improve youth academies, coaching programmes, grassroots football, infrastructure and player development.
By introducing the biggest-ever financial package, the FIFA World Cup 2026 became not only the largest tournament in terms of participating teams and matches but also the richest sporting event in international football history. The increased prize money ensured that every qualified nation benefited financially, while the champions, Spain, celebrated both sporting glory and the highest World Cup winner's reward ever awarded
