New Delhi 13 October( VNI) India's 600 national highways, used by millions daily, present a range of challenges for travelers. Drivers often face sudden health issues, and essential services can be hard to find along these routes. To address these concerns, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, launched the 'Humsafar Policy' in New Delhi on 08 October 2024, taking a major step toward enhancing the travel experience on national highways and expressways.
The policy focuses on developing modern wayside amenities for the convenience of commuters. The launch event was attended by key figures, including Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta, NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, and senior officials from the ministry and NHAI.
Mr. Gadkari stressed the policy’s benefits for marginalized communities and highlighted its commitment to ensuring smoother, safer, and more pleasant journeys for travelers. Designed with an eco-friendly approach, the policy emphasizes water and soil conservation, waste recycling, and the use of solar energy.
Additionally, Mr. Gadkari urged petrol pump owners to maintain essential facilities at their stations, in line with the policy’s broader objective of creating world-class amenities along highways. These facilities will include eateries, fuel stations, and trauma centers, ensuring standardized, well-maintained, and hygienic services for travelers.
Ajay Tamta, Minister of State, provided insights into India’s extensive highway network, which now spans 1.5 lakh kilometers. He affirmed that the Humsafar Policy will improve travel quality and support the continued development of highway infrastructure.
To further assist commuters, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) introduced the 'Rajmarg Yatra' app, which allows travelers to instantly locate nearby service providers, making access to amenities easier and more transparent.
The Humsafar Policy is a comprehensive initiative aimed at improving safety, cleanliness, and comfort on India's highways, while promoting sustainability and supporting local communities.
