NEWS: According to media reports, following Sri Lanka's dismissal for a mere 50 runs, Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed his elation at the outstanding performance of his fast bowlers. He underscored the importance of their diverse skill sets to the team. Pacer Mohammed Siraj's exceptional spell, securing six wickets for 21 runs, played a pivotal role in India's resounding 10-wicket victory in the Asia Cup final. "Witnessing fast bowlers excel like this brings me immense gratification. Every captain takes great pride in having a strong fast bowling unit, and I'm certainly no exception. We boast an exceptional group of fast bowlers," remarked Rohit during the post-match press briefing.
"Each one possesses unique abilities and variations – one excels in pace, another in swing, and yet another in obtaining significant bounce. When you have this array of attributes within one team, it's undeniably a morale booster," Rohit added.
Rohit mentioned that Siraj's adrenaline was running high after an unbroken seven-over spell, resulting in six crucial wickets. It took a word from the team's trainer to halt the eager pacer from continuing.
"It was a delight to observe from the slips how Siraj executed his bowling. He managed to make the ball move more than the others. We were firmly behind him during that spell," the captain stated.
"He bowled seven overs in that spell, and I received a message from the trainer to call it a halt. He was quite eager to continue," Rohit chuckled.
However, Rohit clarified that he hadn't intended to extend Siraj's stint.
"He bowled seven overs, which is quite substantial. Siraj faced a similar situation against SL in Trivandrum, where he bowled about 8-9 overs consecutively," he added.
Rohit also commended the performance of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was later named 'Player of the Tournament'.
"Kuldeep has thrived remarkably under pressure. He delivered an excellent performance against Sri Lanka in the Super 4 match, and we emerged victorious despite posting a modest total." "His confidence has been on a steady rise over the past two years. He has the ability to pull the team back into the game from any scenario," Rohit remarked.
The Mumbai-born player stated that the Asia Cup triumph came at a opportune moment for the team. They've gleaned numerous positives from the tournament as they gear up for the World Cup, slated to commence next month.
"Throughout the tournament, the guys demonstrated resilience under pressure and executed their roles effectively. There were instances where we fell slightly short in fielding, but on the whole, our fielding, particularly slip fielding, was commendable.
"We may have off days on the field, which is normal, as long as we bounce back strongly the next day," he concluded
