New Delhi 6 June VNI This year, the Champakkulam Boat Race, which is one of the oldest and most revered snake boat races in Kerala, once again captivated attendees with its vibrant festivities and remarkable energy. The event, held in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, was not only brimming with excitement but also witnessed a gripping rescue operation, adding an element of dramatic intensity to the occasion. During the boat race on the Pampa River in Kuttanad, a mishap occurred when an exclusively female crewed boat named 'Kattil Thekkethu,' representing the Champakkulam Community Development Society (CDS), capsized. Fortunately, swift rescue efforts averted a major tragedy, and all 26 women aboard the boat were safely rescued and brought ashore. The women received medical attention at a nearby hospital and are in good health. The incident led to a temporary suspension of the races, with district authorities and a state minister in attendance.
The race, which marks the beginning of a series of boat races in the central districts of the state, features various types and sizes of boats competing. As part of the event, an exhibition race is held, which includes two boats called 'Thekenodi.' Notably, the oarsmen of one of these boats are all women, while the other boat carries five men. Unfortunately, the overturning of one of the 'Thekenodi' boats occurred when the exhibition race was interrupted by the larger snake boats creating ripples in the water. The incident occurred during the late afternoon when two races were being held simultaneously.
In the Moolam boat race, thirteen boats, including six snake boats, participated across four categories. According to media reportst he 'Nadubhagom Chundan' boat from the Nadubhagom Boat Club emerged as the victor, securing the prestigious Raja Pramukhan Trophy. The 'Cheruthana Chundan' boat claimed the second position overall, followed by the 'Ayaparambu Valiya Diwanji' in third place,
