New Delhi, March 11 (VNI)  Attention ! Dreaded eye disease Glaucoma is curable if diagnosed early otherwise one can loose vision. It is leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide and India stands second only after China in terms of its prevalence. In India alone, over 1.2 crore people are affected by glaucoma with over 12 lakh of them losing their vision while 90% of them still remain undiagnosed although the corresponding figure for the world is 50%.

But hold on ! Agree these are disturbing facts but  there is a way out also. According to famous glaucoma expert and eye specialist Dr. Manavdeep Singh "Awareness among the masses is the only way to prevent the major cause of Glaucoma. He also said that there are three major reasons why awareness is so much important for glaucoma viz. there are no symptoms in early disease, any loss of vision cannot be reversed  but we have very good treatment modalities available which can halt the disease and can almost invariably prevent blindness. He was speaking at a  public awareness programme and interactive session of experts,  organised on the occasion of World Glaucoma Day 2020. Programme was organised by  Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in association with Glaucoma Society of India (GSI), All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) and Delhi Ophthalmological Society (DOS).The theme this year was  "Beat Invisible Glaucoma.” Another famous Glaucoma specialist Prof. Ramanjit Sihota, head of Glaucoma services of AIIMS  while delivering the lecture stressed the need for public awareness. She said many programmes are being run to create awareness among public about this disease specially for down trodden and  for persons living  in remote areas.People should get their eye check up done regularly
.
Present on the occasion was Dr. Rajeev Garg, Director General Health Services as the chief guest. Sh.
