New Delhi 28  June (VNI) A unique and thrilling "wife carrying contest" took place in Coquitlam, Canada on Sunday as part of the renowned Scandinavian Midsummer Festival. The victorious couple was awarded a trophy and beer that equaled the weight of the wife.

According to the festival's official website, the origins of the contest can be traced back to Finland. The organizers explained, "In the olden days, in small town Finland, there was no social networking or internet dating – if a man wanted a woman from a neighboring village, he had to go and take her! This demonstration of worthiness and determination, accompanied by rumors and hearsay, eventually evolved into the Wife Carrying Contest."

The contest regulations state that participants must be at least 18 years old, and the wife must weigh a minimum of 100 lbs (45 kg). As reported by Tri-Cities News, Eric Blaida and Anna Stonkevich from Coquitlam emerged as the winners, while Mark Fowler and Katelyn Colwell secured the second position.

It is interesting to mention that the BBC shared video clips of the event on their Instagram account today. Many Bollywood enthusiasts commented that the event reminded them of the 2015 film "Dum Laga Ke Haisha," in which the estranged couple of Prem (played by Ayushmann Khurrana) and Sandhya (played by Bhumi Pednekar) reconciled by participating in a similar race.
