Today in History- National Press Day: Celebrating media’s commitment to truth, democracy

New Delhi 16 nov. (VNI)A free and independent media is fundamental to a democratic society, serving as a pillar for transparency, accountability, and the honest flow of information. In India, this vital role is honored each year on November 16, celebrated as National Press Day.This year, National Press Day 2024  marked the 58th anniversary of the Press Council’s establishment This day not only acknowledges the media's contribution to democratic values but also commemorates the efforts of the Indian Press Council—the self-regulatory body committed to safeguarding media freedom and fostering unbiased journalism.

The media functions as a mirror to society, reflecting truths and bringing various issues into public view. National Press Day on November 16 underscores the responsibility, ethics, and freedom of the press to inform the public accurately. The establishment of a committee aimed at enhancing media standards and fostering unity among media organizations ultimately led to the creation of the Press Council of India (PCI). Formed under the chairmanship of Justice Mudholkar, the PCI’s mission is to protect fair and impartial media operations in India and shield journalists from external pressures.

Officially established on July 4, PCI began its work on November 16, marking the first National Press Day. For years, PCI has been dedicated to upholding journalistic integrity in India. Discussions often center around the Right to Information (RTI) Act, the media’s role during crises, and the importance of raising public awareness while responsibly conveying information during emergencies. National Press Day reinforces the media's commitment to transparency and truth, underlining its mission to serve society with integrity and fairness—values crucial to upholding freedom in a democratic society.
