New Delhi 26 June(VNI)Pinnaduwage Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva, better known as Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka has matched the record for the most consecutive five-wicket hauls in One Day Internationals (ODIs) at the start of Sri Lanka's Cricket World Cup Qualifier campaign. The impressive right-arm leg spinner has now equaled the feat achieved by Pakistani legend Waqar Younis, becoming only the second bowler to claim five scalps in three consecutive ODIs. 25 yearold Hasaranga's remarkable performance saw him take 5 wickets for 79 runs from 10 overs against Ireland. This accomplishment adds to his earlier achievements of 6/24 against the UAE and 5/13 against Oman, making it a total of 16 wickets from Sri Lanka's first three ODIs in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023.
Waqar Younis, an esteemed member of the ICC Hall of Fame, initially set the benchmark for this record in 1990 when he took 5/52 against the West Indies. He continued his hot streak with back-to-back five-wicket hauls of 5/11 and 5/16 against New Zealand. Waqar's overall ODI career includes 13 five-wicket hauls, a record he still holds, and 416 wickets from 262 matches. It is worth noting that Waqar missed Pakistan's victory in the 1992 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup due to injury.
Currently, Hasaranga has a total of 61 wickets from 44 ODIs, and these recent five-wicket hauls mark the first three of his promising career thus far. He now has a chance to establish a new record by claiming four consecutive five-wicket hauls when Sri Lanka faces Scotland in their final group phase match at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.
Both Sri Lanka and Scotland have already secured their places in the Super Six stage of the tournament. However, their upcoming encounter holds additional significance as the winner will earn two valuable points for the Super Six stage. With two points already secured by both teams from their victories against Oman, these additional points will contribute to their overall standings. The top two teams at the end of the Super Six stage will earn qualification for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India later this year.
Here is a list of players who have achieved consecutive five-wicket hauls in men's ODIs:
