New Delhi 14 June (VNI) The Biparjoy Cyclone grabs headlines in recent times but have you ever pondered how cyclones and hurricanes acquire their distinctive names?  for example "Biporjoy" is a Bengali word that means Disaster in English  and its name was bestowed by  Bangladesh ,These powerful storms are not arbitrarily labeled but undergo a thoughtful process aimed at facilitating communication and increasing public awareness. Understanding the significance and methodology behind the naming of these natural disasters sheds light on their impact and fosters effective disaster management.

While the destructive nature of cyclones and hurricanes is widely known, their names play a vital role in simplifying discussions and enhancing understanding. Using names instead of complex alphanumeric codes or technical terminology serves not only the general public but also the media, scientific communities, and disaster management agencies. By providing recognizable and memorable names, the unique identity of each storm is established, enabling rapid dissemination of warnings and ensuring community preparedness.

The responsibility of naming cyclones and hurricanes lies with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), a global authority in meteorology. The WMO maintains rotating lists of names specifically curated for each tropical cyclone basin around the world. This standardized approach ensures consistency and coherence in naming practices across regions.

Different ocean basins have their own designated meteorological centers, known as Regional Specialized Meteorological Centers (RSMCs), and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centers (TCWCs). These centers collaborate with the WMO to assign names to cyclones forming within their respective areas. With six RSMCs established worldwide, this coordinated effort ensures that storms are appropriately named based on their origin and impact region.

Historically, hurricanes were named by the National Hurricane Center, but now the responsibility rests with the World Meteorological Organization. The transition allows for a more unified and internationally recognized naming system for hurricanes.

The process of selecting names for cyclones involves a collective effort by member nations of the RSMCs. Each nation proposes names to be included in the pre-determined lists. For instance, the Indian RSMC, comprising 13 nations, suggests 13 names from their region. In the past, cyclones were often named after places, objects, or saints' feast days associated with their occurrence. However, the current approach follows specific guidelines set by the Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC) to ensure sensitivity, inclusivity, and simplicity.

When suggesting names for cyclones, countries must adhere to several rules. Proposed names should be neutral and avoid any political, religious, cultural, or gender associations. The aim is to select names that are universally acceptable, respectful, and devoid of potential offense. Additionally, the chosen names should be short, easy to pronounce, and limited to a maximum of eight letters. To aid communication and comprehension, each proposed name is accompanied by its pronunciation and voiceover.

The meticulous naming process for cyclones and hurricanes underscores the importance of effective communication and public safety. The distinct names assigned to these powerful storms allow for clear identification, seamless dissemination of warnings, and reduced confusion during periods of concurrent storm activity.

Understanding the methodology behind cyclone and hurricane naming not only enriches our knowledge but also reinforces the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of these natural disasters. By embracing this systematic approach, we empower ourselves to respond swiftly and efficiently, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities affected by these formidable weather events.
