New Delhi, 14 July, (VNI) : In a surprising development, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluated the potential cancer-causing properties of aspartame. The evaluation took place in Lyon, France, from June 6 to 13, under the guidance of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO announced that aspartame, an artificial sweetener used in many soft drinks, is now considered "possibly carcinogenic to humans." However, the recommended daily intake of aspartame remains unchanged.

Francesco Branca, the WHO's director of nutrition and food safety, shared these findings during a press conference. The evaluation included two reviews of the available evidence on aspartame.

Aspartame was placed in Group 2B, along with substances that may be associated with liver cancer. However, the evidence regarding cancer in animals was limited.

The WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization convened the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) in Geneva. Their conclusion was that the current acceptable daily intake of aspartame, established in 1981, should not be altered.

To exceed the intake limit, a person would need to consume a large amount of aspartame, such as what is found in many cans of sugar-free drinks.

Branca explained that the main concern lies with individuals who regularly consume high amounts of aspartame. Aspartame is commonly found in diet drinks, gum, ice cream, yogurt, and other products.

The International Sweeteners Association compared the classification of aspartame to other foods like pickled vegetables.

While the JECFA reaffirmed the safety of aspartame, there are still concerns from consumer organizations. They argue that a potentially carcinogenic sweetener should not be part of our food and drinks.

The WHO also advises against relying on non-sugar sweeteners for weight loss, as they may have negative health effects.

Branca suggests choosing water as an alternative to sugary drinks and limiting the consumption of sweetened products.
