6 Dec, (VNI) In a bizarre and seemingly surreal occurrence, the villages of Kalachi and Krasnogorsk in Kazakhstan have become the center of a mysterious  phenomenon where residents fall into deep slumbers for days at a stretch, reminiscent of the fictional character Rip Van Winkle. Since 2013, over 140 people in the two villages, with a combined population of 810, have experienced unexplained episodes of prolonged sleep, accompanied by temporary memory loss, weakness, and headaches upon waking.

This unusual ailment has disrupted the daily lives of the villagers, with instances of individuals abruptly falling asleep during work or even children dozing off at school. Some locals have reported vivid and disturbing dreams, including sightings of winged horses, snakes in their beds, and worms devouring their hands. The bizarre nature of these experiences has left the communities in a state of bewilderment and concern.

The origins of this mysterious sleeping epidemic trace back to the year 2013, when the phenomenon first gained attention. Rudolf Boyarinos and Misha Plyukhin, two local children, shared their unsettling experiences with a local newspaper, Komsomolskaya Pravda. The sudden and inexplicable nature of these sleep episodes has drawn comparisons to fantastical tales or scenes reminiscent of horror movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street.

However, scientists have delved into the heart of this mystery and unearthed a rational explanation. The abandoned uranium mines adjacent to the villages, remnants of the Soviet era, have emerged as potential culprits behind this peculiar ailment. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the mines were left neglected, and Krasnogorsk saw a drastic decline in its population from 6,500 to a mere 130.

Researchers believe that the uranium mines might be emitting harmful gases or other substances, adversely affecting the neurological and physiological well-being of the villagers. Investigations are underway to ascertain the exact connection between the abandoned mines and the sleep-related episodes plaguing Kalachi and Krasnogorsk.

Since 2015, large-scale evacuations have been organized to mitigate the potential health risks posed by the mysterious sleeping epidemic. Authorities are working diligently to address the concerns of the affected communities, emphasizing the urgency of resolving the situation and ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents.

As the enigma deepens, the eyes of the world turn to Kalachi and Krasnogorsk, where an unexplained and surreal phenomenon continues to cast a shadow over the lives of those who call these villages home.
