New  Delhi  8  Dec.   (VNI)  Submarine Day, observed annually on December 8, commemorates the commissioning of INS Kalvari, India’s first submarine, in 1967. This Foxtrot-class submarine, acquired from the Soviet Union, marked India's entry into the elite group of nations with submarine capabilities and strengthened the Indian Navy's maritime defense. Named after a tiger shark, INS Kalvari served with distinction until its decommissioning in 1996. Its legacy continues with the modern Scorpène-class INS Kalvari, commissioned in 2017 under Project 75, showcasing India's advancements in indigenous defense manufacturing. Submarine Day honors the brave submariners and highlights India’s naval progress, inspiring pride in the nation’s defense capabilities.
