Varahagiri Venkata Giri, popularly known as V. V. Giri, was a distinguished Indian statesman, freedom fighter, trade unionist and diplomat. Born on 10 August 1894, he played an important role in India’s labour movement and public life. He served as Minister of Labour from 1952 to 1954 and later became Vice President of India from 1967 to 1969. In 1969, he was elected the fourth President of India, serving until 1974. Known for his strong association with workers’ rights, Giri advocated better working conditions and social justice. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1975 for his contributions to the nation.
