Mahasweta Devi, who passed away on July 28, 2016, was one of India's most celebrated Bengali writers and a fearless social activist. Through her powerful writings, she gave voice to the struggles of tribal communities, landless labourers and other marginalized sections of society. Her acclaimed works, including Hajar Churashir Maa, Rudali, and Aranyer Adhikar, highlighted injustice, exploitation and human resilience. A recipient of the Jnanpith Award, Ramon Magsaysay Award and Padma Vibhushan, Mahasweta Devi combined literature with activism throughout her life.
