Bhisham Sahni was a celebrated Indian writer, playwright and actor who made a lasting contribution to Hindi literature. Born on 8 August 1915, he is best remembered for his powerful novel Tamas, which portrays the human tragedy and communal tensions surrounding the Partition of India. His writing reflected the complexities of society, human relationships and the struggles of ordinary people. Apart from novels, Sahni wrote short stories, plays and essays, earning widespread recognition for his simple yet deeply meaningful style. His literary works continue to be read and remembered for their social relevance, emotional depth and humane perspective. He passed away on 11 July 2003.
