New Delhi (VNI)15 July.   Late music director Madan Mohan occupies a unique and cherished place in the history of Hindi cinema. More than five decades after his passing, his compositions continue to captivate listeners with their depth, purity and emotional appeal. His music transcends generations, proving that true melodies never grow old. Every year, his birth and death anniversaries offer music lovers an opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of one of India's greatest composers.

Born as Madan Mohan Kohli on June 25, 1924, in Baghdad, Iraq, where his father Rai Bahadur Chunnilal Kohli was serving in the administration, Madan Mohan belonged to a Punjabi family. The family later returned to India, where he spent his formative years. Although born abroad, his upbringing, education and musical journey were deeply rooted in India. From an early age, he displayed a keen interest in music despite coming from a family closely associated with the film industry through his father.

Before entering films, Madan Mohan briefly served in the Indian Army, an experience that reflected his disciplined personality. He later joined All India Radio, Lucknow, where he came in close contact with eminent classical musicians and singers. These interactions enriched his understanding of Indian classical music and shaped the unique musical style that later became his signature.

He made his debut as an independent music director in 1950 and soon established himself as a composer who valued melody over commercial trends. His music beautifully blended Indian classical traditions with ghazals and poetic lyrics, earning him the title of the "Prince of Ghazals." His compositions were marked by graceful orchestration, emotional richness and timeless appeal.

One of the greatest chapters of his career was his legendary association with Lata Mangeshkar. Together they created some of the most unforgettable songs in Hindi cinema. His collaborations with Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey and other celebrated singers also produced numerous classics that continue to be admired by music lovers across the world.

Among his most memorable compositions are Lag Ja Gale, Naina Barse Rim Jhim Rim Jhim, Aap Ki Nazron Ne Samjha, Hai Isi Mein Pyar Ki Aabroo, Teri Aankhon Ke Siva, Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho, Kar Chale Hum Fida, Dil Dhoondta Hai, Baiyan Na Dharo, Woh Chup Rahen To, Milo Na Tum To, Rang Aur Noor Ki Baraat, Agar Mujhse Mohabbat Hai and Hoke Majboor Mujhe. These songs remain evergreen and continue to feature prominently on radio, television, streaming platforms and live concerts.

His remarkable body of work includes memorable films such as Anpadh, Woh Kaun Thi?, Haqeeqat, Mera Saaya, Dastak, Heer Raanjha, Mausam, Dulhan Ek Raat Ki, Hindustan Ki Kasam and Laila Majnu. His music consistently elevated the emotional depth of these films and remains one of their strongest attractions.

In 1970, Madan Mohan received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Dastak, a fitting recognition of his extraordinary talent and contribution to Indian cinema. Although many of his films did not become major commercial successes during his lifetime, critics and music lovers always acknowledged the exceptional quality of his compositions.

His timeless legacy found a new audience in 2004, when several of his previously unused compositions were beautifully adapted for the blockbuster film Veer-Zaara. The film introduced younger generations to his musical genius and reaffirmed that great melodies remain relevant irrespective of time.

Madan Mohan passed away in Mumbai on July 14, 1975, at the age of just 51. Though his life was cut short, his contribution to Indian music remains immeasurable. His compositions continue to inspire musicians, singers and composers, while listeners across generations still find comfort, romance and emotion in his melodies.

As the saying goes, good music never goes out of style. Madan Mohan's songs are a shining example of this timeless truth. His legacy lives on in every note of his unforgettable compositions, ensuring that his name will forever remain among the greatest music directors in the history of Indian cinema.
