Virat Kohli became the owner of another batting record in cricket as he once again surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to hold the world record for most calendar years (8) in international cricket with 1000 or more ODI runs. Tendulkar had held the record by scoring 1000 runs or more in ODIs in seven calendar years, but Kohli surpassed the batting great by bringing up 1000 ODI runs for 2023 in the game against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in World Cup 2023. In the World Cup match at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, former India captain Virat Kohli was on the verge of a significant milestone. He was in pursuit of Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49 ODI centuries. It could have been a historic day for Kohli, as he had missed out on this achievement against New Zealand by just five runs. Interestingly, Tendulkar himself was present at the stadium to witness this potential record-breaking moment. While fans were eagerly anticipating Kohli's century, he had already surpassed Tendulkar in a different aspect of ODI cricket. Kohli had amassed 1000 or more runs in ODIs in a single calendar year for the eighth time, compared to Tendulkar's seven occasions during his illustrious ODI career. At 34 years old, Kohli was in exceptional form, consistently delivering strong performances in the World Cup. He had already accumulated over 400 runs in that year's tournament, and fans were eagerly awaiting his 49th ODI century. Aside from that year, Kohli had achieved the milestone of 1000 runs in a calendar year in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. After a four-year hiatus, the former India captain had once again managed to surpass the 1000-run mark in the 50-over format in a single year.
