07 Nov, (VNI) In a historic turn of events, Angelo Mathews of Sri Lanka became the first player ever to be timed out in international cricket during a World Cup group match against Bangladesh in Delhi. The incident unfolded as Mathews was preparing to face Shakib Al Hasan, and his helmet strap unexpectedly broke.

As Mathews called for a replacement helmet, delivered by Chamika Karunaratne, the clock began ticking. According to ICC playing conditions, a batter must be ready to receive the ball within two minutes after a dismissal or retirement. Unfortunately for Mathews, the time elapsed, and he was deemed timed out.

Reserve umpire Adrian Holdstock explained the process behind the dismissal during the innings break, emphasizing that no discretion is given for equipment malfunction. Holdstock clarified, "Technically, you should be there within maybe 15 seconds to make sure all those things are in place before you actually receive the ball."

Despite Mathews' attempts to discuss the decision with umpires Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, the ruling stood. This left Mathews visibly frustrated as he left the field, kicking his helmet in frustration and tossing his bat aside.

The dismissal came at a critical juncture for Sri Lanka, leaving them at 135 for 5. However, Charith Asalanka's impressive hundred helped the team recover, ultimately reaching a total of 279.

The incident added a new layer of drama to the longstanding rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, leaving cricket fans worldwide buzzing about this unprecedented event.

Sri Lanka will now look to regroup and continue their World Cup campaign, while Angelo Mathews' untimely dismissal will undoubtedly be a topic of discussion in the cricketing world for days to come.
