New Delhi 12 November (VNI) Dr. Salim Mojuuddin Abdul Ali, popularly known as the "Birdman of India", is one of India's leading ornithologists and naturalists. He was the first Indian to conduct bird research in the subcontinent and has written many popular books on ornithology in India. He was 12 years old during the British Raj and had a deep fascination with birds, which led him to do good work in this field. He laid the foundation of modern Indian ornithology by collecting many species from all over India through his bird research. In recognition of his work, the Indian government awarded him two of the country's highest awards, the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan.
He died in Mumbai on June 20, 1987, but his legacy lives on, inspiring people and conservation in India and beyond. Salim Ali's contribution remains a cornerstone in the field of ornithology and wildlife conservation..
